Q: What rule has God given to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy him?
A. The word of God, which is contained in the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, is the only rule to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy him.
God has directed us. What a blessed thought. Failing at our purpose as God’s image bearers, God would be fully justified to witness our fall and to leave us without direction in returning to a state of glorying and enjoying him. But God, being rich in mercy, gives us direction and has preserved that direction for thousands of years. Both the Old and the New speak of how we might glorify God by obeying him, resting in him, displaying his character to the world. Both the Old and the New reveal to us how God is to be enjoyed, namely through the work of his Son and the commandments that he gives that are not burdensome but are for our joy. (1 John 5v3) And it is our only rule. In his infinite wisdom God has inspired his Word and has called his Church to uphold it. No man, no tradition, no counsel is over the Word but is under it’s authority. And this is our hope, that the closer we hold fast to this rule, the more we glorify God and enjoy his beauty.
